4.40.01 (4-tlr) Trailers
Policy
The 4-tlr plate class is primarily used to register a trailer for non-commercial (recreational) purposes.
Commercial trailers registered with the 4-tlr plate class must have the weight of its load included in the towing units Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
A trailer registration does not require renewal and is valid for the life of a licence plate series.
The following types of trailers are registered in a Class 4 tlr category:
- Recreational, e.g.,
- Holiday (travel) trailers.
- Utility trailers.
- Boat trailers.
- Tent trailers.
- Commercial or public service trailers.
- Government trailers.
- Stock trailers.
- Tow dollies.
- Trailers owned by a rental/leasing company.
- Trailers owned by a retail trailer dealer and used for demonstration purposes only.
- Trailers with permanently mounted axles and tires, e.g.,
- Bunk houses.
- Dog houses.
- Kitchen/diners.
- Offices.
- Wash cars.
Registration Requirements
The client must:
- Provide acceptable identification, see 2.05.02 Acceptable Identification/Enrolment – Section .
- Provide proof of ownership, when valued over $1,000.00, see 4.00.01 Vehicle Ownership, Creation and Registration Documents.
- Provide an Alberta address, see 2.10.01 Addresses and Acceptable Abbreviations.
Registration Exemptions
Some trailers may be exempt from registration in accordance with subsection 45(d) and section 47 of the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, see 4.05.01 Exempted Vehicles/Trailers.
Note:
A registry agent may contact Alberta Transportation if verification is required regarding registration of specific types of trailers.
Intransit Permit
A client moving a trailer on a one time basis from point A to point B may purchase an Intransit Permit; see 4.45.05 In-transit Permits.
Trailers Moved on a One Time Basis
A 4-tlr trailer plate may be issued to companies or individuals (operating under trade names) who are engaged in the business of towing trailers. Trailer towing registration allows a client to move different unregistered trailers from point A to point B (e.g. A company hired to move a trailer from the manufacturer to a dealership).
Note:
The registered owner of the towing vehicle:
- Cannot own the trailer being towed.
and - The weight of the trailer must be covered under the towing unit or the client must contact Alberta Transportation to purchase a load licensing permit.
The trailer registration document will not indicate a specific trailer description. A registry agent must enter the following information on the MOVES Add or Modify Vehicle Parts screen:
- VIN as "TRAILERTOWING".
- Color as "other".
- Year as "1900" and enter "Y" in the override field.
- Make as "unknown" and enter "Y" in the override field.
- Model as "other".
- Style as "trailer".
- Status as "active".
