Policy
ATTENTION:
Please refer to COVID-19 Emergency Interim Policies which provides details for temporary exceptions to this policy.
An in-transit permit is issued to authorize the movement of an unregistered vehicle or trailer between two points in Canada (travel within Canadian borders). Either the point of origin or the point of destination must be within Alberta. The client purchasing an in-transit permit does not have to be the owner of the vehicle.
In-transit permits are only issued in the following situations, and for a maximum of seven days unless otherwise stated:
- Unregistered vehicles moving from point A to B
- Towed vehicles
- For demonstration/test drive purposes
- Repairs/servicing
- Salvage vehicles (for a maximum of 24 hours).
Note:
Extensions to the number of days issued for in-transit permits are not permitted.
Requirements
A client must:
- Provide acceptable identification; see 2.05.02 Acceptable Identification/Enrolment.
- Provide proof of insurance; see 4.00.02 Insurance Documents.
Note:
If a client does not have an Alberta MVID, a registry agent must complete the service under their office MVID. A registry agent must not create a client MVID for the purpose of issuing an in-transit permit; see 2.05.01 Individual Client Creation & Demographic Changes.
Load Licensing Permit
When an unregistered vehicle or trailer is carrying a load, a Load Licensing Permit is required in addition to the In-transit Permit. The client must contact Alberta Transportation for more information.
Prepaid In-transit Permit Books
A registry agent must send a copy of the MOVES transaction receipt to Motor Vehicles, showing payment under the client MVID.
Fees
