4.45.01 Antique Vehicles
Policy
The antique plate class is used to register a vehicle (which includes motorcycles):
- At least 25 years old.
- Only operated as a collector’s item in exhibitions, club activities, parades and transportation to and from these activities.
- Driven to and from a garage for servicing.
- Never used for general transportation.
Antique vehicles:
- May be registered with an antique plate.
- Are registered with a continuous expiry date.
Exception
When an antique vehicle owner has a cloth registration in their name and its corresponding vintage licence plate (issued prior to September 1984), the licence plates are valid until the vehicle changes ownership.
When the cloth registration and/or the corresponding vintage licence plate needs replacement, the client must register and obtain a current antique licence plate and registration.
Vintage Plates
A vintage plate is an Alberta licence plate issued the same year that the vehicle was manufactured. A vehicle registered with an antique plate may display either the antique licence plate or the vintage licence plate to the antique vehicle, but not both. Record the vintage licence plate number in the “Co. Unit #.” field on MOVES.
Note:
An Alberta licence plate must be imprinted with the year in order to be used as a vintage plate. The last Alberta licence plate to be imprinted with a year was 1973 (orange lettering on dark blue).
Antique Motorcycle Plates
Antique motorcycle plates are only available through Motor Vehicles. A registry agent must:
- Order the antique plate from Motor Vehicles (MVS@gov.ab.ca).
- Upon receipt of the antique motorcycle plate from Motor Vehicles, contact the client for issuance of the licence plate and registration.
