1.00.15 Vehicle Information Report (VIR)

Policy

A Vehicle Information Report (VIR) is the search product used to confirm a vehicle’s registration history in Alberta. The back of the VIR explains each section of the report.

VIR’s are available to all clients.

Requirements

Walk-in clients must provide the VIN of the vehicle being searched.

AMVIR Agreement Holders must provide:

  • Their search account MVID (PUAN).
  • The VIN of the vehicle being searched.

Procedure

A registry agent’s search account MVID (PUAN) must have the VSVR attribute in place to be able to charge VIR requests and process transactions; see 2.20.02 Attributes Added by Government Departments.

Note:
If a registry agent does not have a search account MVID (PUAN) or the VSVR attribute, contact Registries Assurance.

The registry agent must:

  • Process all VIR services for:
    • AMVIR Agreement Holders under the requesting organization’s search account MVID (PUAN), and not the personal MVID of the individual requesting the VIR.
    • Walk-in clients under the client’s personal MVID.
  • Enter the complete VIN for the vehicle.
  • Select the appropriate vehicle.
    • If there are multiple valid Vehicle Access Codes (VACs) for one VIN (including duplicate VINs), the client must be provided with a report for each VAC. A government fee may only be charged for the first report. The registry agent must override the government fee for all following VIR’s for that VIN.
  • Print the VIR report and collect the required fees.

Note:
For charged VIR services or if a client does not have an Alberta MVID, agents must complete the service using their office search account MVID.

User Guide

For processing refer to the Vehicle Information Report User Guide (pdf).

Fees

For VIR fees, see the Registry Agent Product Catalogue (pdf).

Note:
