1.00.16 Driver’s Abstracts / Commercial Driver’s Abstracts
Policy
ATTENTION:
Please refer to COVID-19 Emergency Interim Policies which provides details for temporary exceptions to this policy.
Driver’s Abstracts and Commercial Driver’s Abstracts are issued for a 3, 5 or 10-year period and contain driver record information that is personal and confidential. Driver’s Abstracts are issued only for individuals, not organizations.
Two types of Abstracts are available for purchase:
- Driver’s Abstracts: provides the current status of a driver’s licence, lists conviction information, and any applicable demerit points and suspensions; however, it does not confirm a client’s driving experience, nor their date first licenced.
- Contains: the client’s name, address, date of birth, height, weight, sex, MVID, driver’s licence number and issue date, expiration date, class, current demerit points, whether they are suspended or not, reinstatement conditions (if any) and a list of violations (descriptions, demerit/merit points and suspension term).
- If an individual’s Alberta driver’s licence has been invalid for more than 6 months, the driver’s licence number, issue date, expiry date and class of licence will not appear on the abstract.
- Contains: the client’s name, address, date of birth, height, weight, sex, MVID, driver’s licence number and issue date, expiration date, class, current demerit points, whether they are suspended or not, reinstatement conditions (if any) and a list of violations (descriptions, demerit/merit points and suspension term).
- Commercial Driver’s Abstracts: includes Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspection information and all of the above information, except for date of birth, height, weight, and sex.
The insurance industry is not eligible to purchase Commercial Driver’s abstracts.
All queries relating to conviction events that resulted from the operation of commercial vehicles and results from inspections must be directed to Alberta Transportation, Carrier Services.

Note:
For Commercial Driver’s Abstracts, when the MOTRIS system is unavailable, MOVES will display the following error message 16034 - The process has not returned a Commercial Driver Abstract yet, press PF11/F11 for more information. Commercial Driver’s Abstracts cannot be processed when the MOTRIS system is unavailable.
Requirements
Walk-in Clients
Clients applying for their own Driver’s Abstract/Commercial Driver’s Abstract must complete a Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information form (REG 3394) (pdf).
Out of province clients requesting their own Driver’s Abstract/Commercial Driver’s Abstract must provide a completed Notarized Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information form (REG 3392) (pdf); see 1.00.03 Out of Province Clients Requesting Their Own Personal Information.
A parent/legal guardian applying on behalf of a minor dependent (person under 18 years of age), who is not self-supporting or married, must provide a Driver Abstract Statement of Intent Form (REG 3388) (pdf). Written consent is not required from the minor dependent; see 2.00.02 Minor – Consent / Self Sufficiency.
Individual’s personally known to the driver, not including lawyers/law firms and current/prospective employers, with the written consent of the driver, must present the following documents:
- Completed Statement of Intent; see Driver Abstract Statement of Intent Form (REG 3388) (pdf).
- Completed Consent Form; see Driver Abstract Consent Form (REG 3387) (pdf).
- This can be original, faxed or emailed.
Note:
Consent given in any way other than on the Driver Abstract Consent Form (REG3387) is not acceptable.
Any lawyer / lawfirm or employer / prospective employer that has consent to request a driver’s abstract on behalf of an individual must be an AMVIR Agreement Holder; see 1.00.05 AMVIR Agreement Holders.
AMVIR Agreement Holders
AMVIR Agreement Holders must present an official request letter on company letterhead, but are not required to present a statement of intent or consent from their clients.
The letter must:
- Include a list of all drivers’ abstracts requested.
- Include each driver’s full name and a second search identifier (driver’s licence number, date of birth, or MVID of the driver)
- Specify the type of driver’s abstract and if the request is for a 3, 5 or 10 year period (as per the client’s consent).
- When not specified, a 3 year driver’s abstract will be issued.
Note:
All Driver Abstracts must be processed under the AMVIR agreement holder’s Personal Unique Access Number (PUAN).
Corporate Carriers
Carriers who are corporations and have been assigned an excellent safety rating by Alberta Transportation Carriers Services, must have a valid AMVIR Agreement and PUAN, and a CS-EXSR client attribute by Alberta Registries.
These clients must present a request letter on company letterhead, but are not required to present a statement of intent or consent from their clients.
The letter must:
- Include a list of all driver abstracts requested.
- Include each driver’s full name and a second search identifier (driver’s licence number, date of birth, or MVID of the driver).
- Specify the type of driver’s abstract and if the request is for 3, 5 or 10 year period (as per the client’s consent).
- When not specified, a 3 year driver’s abstract will be issued.
Owner-operator Carriers
Carriers who are owner-operators and have been assigned an excellent safety rating by Alberta Transportation Carrier Services, are not required to have a PUAN. Alberta Registries will assign the CS-EXSR client attribute to the individual client file MVID.
These clients must present the following documents:
- Acceptable identification; see 2.05.02 Acceptable Identification/ Enrolment.
- A complete Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information Form (REG 3394) (pdf).
When a client has inquiries about the safety rating assigned by Alberta Transportation Carrier Services, they must contact Alberta Transportation Carrier Services at (403) 340-5430.
Procedure
A registry agent must:
- Process the abstract using the applicable MVID for the client type.
- Collect the required fees.
- Print the MOVES TX.
Note:
Refunds or backouts will not be permitted for the wrong type of abstract being provided. A registry agent must ensure the client requests the correct type of abstract (driver's abstract or commercial driver's abstract).
Clients Requesting Their Own Information
The abstract service must be processed under the MVID of the individual requesting the abstract.
Walk-in Clients with Consent (Third Party)
When a walk-in client is applying for an abstract on behalf of someone else, the MOVES service must be processed under the MVID of the client in the office using the one-time client flag.
AMVIR Agreement Holders
All requests from AMVIR Agreement Holders must be processed under the PUAN that has been assigned the applicable authority level; see 1.00.05 AMVIR Agreement Holders.
Corporate Carriers
All requests from corporate carriers must be processed under the PUAN that has been assigned the CS-EXSR client attribute; see 2.20.02 Attributes Added by Government Departments.
Owner-operator Carriers
Requests for the personal driver’s abstract/commercial driver’s abstract of an owner-operator carrier must be processed under the client MVID that has been assigned the CS-EXSR client attribute; see 2.20.02 Attributes Added by Government Departments.
Faxing to Employers or Lawyers / Law Firms
Current / prospective employers and lawyers / law firms who request a driver’s abstract or commercial driver’s abstract be faxed must complete Part 2 Declaration for Faxing of Driver Abstract Consent Form (REG 3387) (pdf).
Audit

Further, AMVIR Agreement Holders (including carriers who are corporations and have been assigned a PUAN) are not required to provide the registry agent with the client’s consent. The consent document must remain in the possession of the account holder for Alberta Registry audit purposes.
