4.30.01 (2-58) Farm Vehicles

Policy

A 2-58 plate class is used to register the vehicle of a client who has been approved by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry for their Alberta Farm Fuel Benefit (AFFB) Program.

Clients who use their vehicle for both farming and commercial business activities do not require a farm registration to haul their own goods. The client is eligible to apply to Alberta Treasury Board and Finance for a rebate of the fuel tax, and if applicable, the AFFDA on fuel used to haul their own goods.

Clients, who choose to register their vehicle for both farming and commercial business activities, see 4.50.03 Dual Registration Program must use clear fuel commercially and apply for a rebate from Treasury Board and Finance when carrying out farm business.

The following vehicles qualify as farm vehicles:

  • Trucks (MOVES Style Code 12).
  • Utility vehicles and Sport Utility Vehicles (MOVES Style Code 08).
  • Cargo vans (MOVES Style Code cg)

A cargo van is a van that was originally designed with no passenger seats and no side windows. This does not include passenger vans that have been modified to remove the seats. Registry agents must change the MOVES Style Code from van (22) to cargo van (cg) when the client indicates their vehicle is a cargo van.

All other vehicles are not eligible as farm vehicles, and are not eligible to hold a (2-58) Farm Vehicle plate.

Clients registered with a 2-58 plate class may apply for a veterans’ plate. For registration requirement information, see 4.45.08 Veterans’ Plates.

Air Brakes

A holder of a class 2, 3, 4 or 5 Driver's Licence driving a motor vehicle with air brakes that is registered as farm vehicle does not require the driver to have an air brake certificate or endorsement on their licence if the farmer is only engaged in the delivery of animals, farm products, grains or farm produce to:

  • The farmer’s farm, if those commodities are to be used by the farmer in the operation of the farm.
    or
  • A market, if the commodities being transported were either grown or raised by the farmer on the farmer’s farm.
