4.50.05 Salvage / Non-repairable Vehicles
Policy
A salvage or non-repairable vehicle status is recorded on MOVES by an insurance company or self-insured through Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC).
Salvage Vehicle
When a vehicle with a “salvage” status has had a Salvage Vehicle Inspection indicating the vehicle is road worthy, the status must be changed to “rebuilt”. MOVES will not allow a vehicle to be registered with a “salvage” status; see 4.10.02 Vehicle Inspections / Vehicle Inspection Certificate and QR 4.8 Alberta Vehicle Status Chart (pdf).
Inspections must be completed at an Alberta Vehicle Inspection Facility. A list is available on www.alberta.ca.
Salvage Vehicle Inspection Certificate
The Salvage Vehicle Inspection Certificate must:
- Be an original.
- Have the VIN recorded.
- Be dated within the last 14 days.
- When the certificate is more than 14 days old, a new inspection is required. There are no exceptions.
- Be signed by a licensed journeyman/technician.
- Be from an approved Alberta Vehicle Inspection Facility.
Change or Error on Vehicle Inspection Certificate
When a change or error has been made on a vehicle inspection certificate the client must:
- Return to the inspection facility to have a new inspection certificate issued.
- The licensed journeyman/technician who completed the initial certificate must issue a new inspection certificate.
Note:
No changes or corrections are to be made to any Alberta issued Government Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
Non-repairable Vehicles
When a vehicle status has been updated with a “non-repairable” status on MOVES, that vehicle can never be registered.
A client may declare their vehicle as non-repairable by presenting a written request that must be sent to TEC.
Imaging
All supporting documents must be sent for imaging; see the appropriate sub-section in 1.15 Imaging.
