4.50.07 Odometer Reading Program

Policy

The Odometer Reading Program is a voluntary program administered in partnership with Alberta Transportation, Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC), Alberta Registries and Alberta registry agents.

This program applies to all motor vehicles except off-highway vehicles and trailers.

MOVES does not distinguish an odometer reading as miles or kilometers. Record the odometer reading as presented; do not convert miles to kilometers or vice versa. Odometer readings for vehicles manufactured before 1978 and imported from the US are usually miles.

Vehicle odometer readings are captured on MOVES when a client requests a vehicle service and volunteers the information. Odometer information may also be captured from the following documents:

  • Out of province used vehicle inspection reports.
  • Bill of sale on the reverse side of the Vehicle Registration Certificate.
  • On the reverse side of the Vehicle Renewal Notice.
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate (CVIP).
  • Salvage Inspection Certificate.

Odometer readings captured on out of province used vehicle inspections and salvage inspections must be recorded on MOVES.

When recording a client’s odometer reading, visual verification by the registry clerk is not required. Do not allow clients to guess what an odometer reading might be.

Odometer readings are not printed on vehicle registrations.

Vehicle Information Report

All odometer readings are displayed in chronological order (newest first) on MOVES through the Odometer Reading Display. However, only the last three entries are printed on a VIR.

To obtain odometer readings, clients must purchase a Vehicle Information Report (VIR). Never release information or issue MOVES screen prints regarding odometer readings.

A VIR displays up to three odometer readings, specifically the date the reading was recorded on MOVES and a reason code, if applicable.

The following reason codes are recorded by Alberta Transportation:

  • M - mechanical when the odometer is broken.
  • R - rollback when the odometer has been rolled back.
  • N - odometer replacement when the odometer has been replaced.
  • C - clerical when the clerk entered the wrong number. This code will not print on the VIR, but will be displayed on MOVES.

Rollbacks

When Alberta Transportation determines, as a result of an investigation, that a vehicle odometer was rolled back, reason code “R” is displayed on MOVES and a letter sent to the client. Clients presenting this letter should be referred to Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) at 1-877-979-8100.

Fees

There is no fee to record an odometer reading on MOVES.
