3.15.08 Operator Cancel

Policy

ATTENTION:
Please refer to COVID-19 Emergency Interim Policies which provides details for temporary exceptions to this policy.

An operator cancel service is used when:

  • A client requests their driver’s licence be cancelled.
    • The request must be made in person or in writing.
  • Alberta Registries and/or Alberta Transportation have determined that a client is not fit to drive a motor vehicle due to medical reasons.
  • A client falsifies information on a driver’s licence application.
  • A client is deceased.
    • Cancellation may be processed for the executor/executrix of the estate only. Proof of death in the form of a death certificate or funeral director’s statement of death is required.

System Generated Refund

A refund is generated for the remaining credit on the unexpired portion of a cancelled driver licence term, less a $10.00 administration fee and GST.

All refund cheques are mailed to the client and take approximately four to six weeks.

Licensing Requirements

When a client attends a registry office in person to request the cancel service, a client must present acceptable identification; see 2.05.02 Acceptable ID / Enrolment.

When the client is unable to attend a registry office, they may:

  • Provide a copy of acceptable identification; see 2.05.02 Acceptable ID / Enrolment.
  • Send a written request containing the following elements directly to the registry agent office:
    • Date.
    • Name.
    • Address.  
    • Driver’s licence number or MVID.
    • Signature.

The registry agent must:

  • Update the client’s address as per the request.
  • Process the service as of the date the registry agent received the request for cancellation.
  • Advise the client the driver’s licence/ID card must be destroyed.

Imaging

The signed written request/screen print and all supporting documents must be sent for imaging; see the appropriate sub-section in 1.15 Microfilm.
