3.15.10 Destruction of Returned Alberta Driver's Licences & Identification Cards
Policy
A client is only required to surrender their Alberta driver’s licence when:
- The driver’s licence is suspended.
- Requesting an early start date on a demerit suspension; see 3.30.02 Demerit Points / Suspension.
- Obtaining a restricted driver’s licence for a demerit suspension or the ignition interlock program; see 3.20.03 Restricted Driver's Licence (Demerit) Program & 3.20.04 Ignition Interlock Program.
- An Operator Return – No Refund service is processed (this also applies to ID cards); see 3.15.09 Operator Return - No Refund.
A registry agent must ensure the client is aware that their surrendered driver’s licence or ID card will be destroyed.
A client may also choose to voluntarily surrender their card to a registry agent for secure destruction.
Destruction
At the completion (pay out and successful transmission to SIMS) of the operator service the surrendered driver’s licence or ID card must be securely destroyed in the presence of the client.
Returned / Surrendered by Third Party
Driver’s Licences / ID card's returned by a third party, are not entered on MOVES. Destroy the surrendered driver’s licence/ID card.
